Hayward Construction completed the refurbishment of the Molesworth Station Homestead starting the project in January of 2018. Bryce arrived on site with a small crew of dedicated tradesmen who set about their work in a very target driven way. Goals were set each week with the right builder tasked to his strengths. We live over 2 hours’ drive from the nearest town so the logistics involved in having all materials on site when required were more complex. All the crew stayed on site for the duration of the project, staying away from family creates its own pressures but at no stage did these issues cause work to be held up. Safety in the work site was a big part of their team and this was taken seriously.
The Homestead is an historic Cobb building dating back to the early 1870’s. During the Kaikoura earth quake the damage sustained to the structural integrity of the building was significant, for a period of time consideration was given to demolishing and starting again. Due to the historic nature of the home the decision was made to rebuild the entire internal foot print and keep the external Cobb in its original state, basically a house within a house.
The proximity of the Homestead to the Alpine fault line combined with the Cobb material created a number of engineering issues that had to be over come through out the build. The fact that it is an historic building added another layer of scrutiny as well. At times it seemed like we were confronted with problems that needed attention virtually on a daily basis. This is where Bryce really showed his strengths as nothing ever seemed close to beating him. He has a very collaborative approach, calling on all his crew and sub-contractors to contribute to the problem solving and taking ownership of the outcome.
Hayward Construction have certainly left their mark in this piece of the South Island high country. Their efforts in bringing the damaged homestead back to life again is something that will be acknowledged for generations to come.
